Taking it easy at Evesham Vale Carp FisheryAimed at both experienced and inexperienced carp anglers and those who fancy going for their first 20lbs-plus fish, Evesham Vale Carp Fishery opened for business in August 2006.

Developed by Andy Stump, the man behind the highly successful Wildmoor Waters and Rookery Meadow carp fisheries, and colleague Phil Chun of Cotswold Bait Creations, Evesham Vale enjoyed a mass of pre-opening publicity in the national and regional angling Media where it was highly acclaimed as a excellent 'runs' water.

The bay near the car park at Evesham ValeIndeed, Evesham Vale was developed after Andy and Phil saw potential in the market for a quality runs water in the Midlands where anglers and their families, as well as more experienced carp anglers, could catch a lot of fish.

As Andy said: "We are aiming Evesham Vale at what you could call 'progressing' carp anglers who want to catch good sized fish whilst at the same time encourage accompanied youngsters to take up the sport. We did not see any reason why anglers should have to travel to Oxford and the south of England to get that.

"As a result we have developed what can be classified as an easy but quality runs waters where people can catch a lot of fish in a secure environment."

Looking up Evesham Vale Carp FisheryAt 11 acres in size and with just 29 well-spaced pegs, all of them with grassed areas suitable for erecting bivvies, Evesham Vale is big enough to be a potential big carp water of the future.

To help it on its way it has been stocked with upwards of 1,200 fish to over 25lbs. Of these, more than 50 fish were stocked at over 20lbs whilst the majority of the remainder were between 9lbs and 12lbs.

A typical bivvie area behind an Evesham Vale pegEvesham Vale's opening at the end of August 2006 marked the culmination of 12 months' work which saw the removal of a limited number of bankside trees to create new pegs, digging out and grassing level areas behind pegs to create ideal standings for bivvies, and sensitively landscaping the banks to make the water more attractive.

Throughout the design and implementation, care has been taken to ensure that anglers cannot see the person in the next peg and can't cross their lines.

Every effort has also been made to make the fishing as simple as possible so Evesham Vale has few rules. Amongst these are that there is a maximum limit of two rods and that there is a ban on bait boats and nuts. Anglers are required to have a quality unhooking mat and a minimum of 40 inch landing net, safe rigs and micro-barb or barbless hooks.

Part of the entrance end bay at Evesham ValeEvesham Vale Carp Fishery

Despite its size, Evesham Vale is only between four and seven feet deep with a uniform, sandy bottom which makes it easy to fish for both inexperienced and more experienced carp anglers.

The fishery has modern secure entry gates which are closed at dark and re-open again in the morning, a large car park and separate ladies and gents toilets. The bank which is used for fishing has a well maintained grass trackway which leads to each of the 29 pegs whilst the first large peg next to the car park is suitable for disabled anglers. The far bank of the lake is not fished because it forms part of the adjacent Vale Golf Course.

Looking towards the far end of Evesham ValeAs far as the fishing goes, Evesham Vale can effectively be split into three distinct areas - a good sized tree-lined bay near the car park, the central more open section of water and a bay at the far end. Both bays provide some shelter from the prevailing wind.

Because the fish have been hand fed with more than seven and a half tons of pellets since they were introduced early in 2006, 6mm and 8mm pellets have proved to be a very effective bait in pre-opening test sessions on the water, as have UFO Cotswold Bait boilies.

One of the pegs halfway down the bankBecause of this, the same pellets can be purchased at the fishery in either 3.5kg buckets and £6.00 or 10kg bags at £15.00, although it is expected that as the fish mature and become more wary of anglers over the years they will gradually become less effective.

Anglers who have fished the water so far suggest that groundbaiting is not necessary, although hemp added to a fairly sloppy spod mix seems to work well. Filling a pva bag with hook samples and hemp has also so far proved effective, whilst hand feeding pellets, boilies and hemp close to the side is another good technique as the fish have already started patrolling the margins in search of food.

The bay at the far end of Evesham Vale pegObservations on the water show that there are no particular hot spots as fish can be seen feeding all over, although anglers who prefer to fish more sheltered swims will graduate towards the bays at either end whilst those looking for more open stretches where they can cast a long bait will head for the central sections of the lake.

Anglers from the media including Angling Times, Anglers Mail, Total Carp, Crafty Carper and Midland Angler who have test fished the lake suggest that, whichever technique you use, it has so far paid to bait your swim quite heavily and follow up with more pellets and hook samples at intervals throughout your session to keep the fish in your swim.

A peg towards the far end of Evesham ValeOne angler took a total of 25 fish in a 12 hour session whilst another said he had caught so many carp in the evening session he decided to go to sleep at midnight to get his strength back and carry on fishing again in the morning!

In addition to pellets, fishmeal based boilies have also proved good baits, with most of the bigger fish being taken from the edge of the baited area rather than in the central parts of the swim. Fishing this way, best results have been had by baiting the hook with a larger pellet or boilie than those used in the free offerings.

Early tests have also shown that a 'snowman rig' using one traditional boilie and one pop-up which counter balances the traditional boilie is also very effective.
