To be found in stunning countryside some four miles outside Dumfries and a short drive from the main Dumfries to Dalbeattie road, Alderneuk is a most attractive and well stocked three acre fly-only loch holding good sized rainbow, blue, brown and tiger trout.

Alderneuk is a most attractive fisheryOpen from 8.00am until dusk from April to October with the exception of Tuesdays when it is closed, Alderneuk is also open from 8.00am until dusk from November to March when it is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

A quiet and friendly family-owned fishery run by anglers, Alderneuk is a spring fed loch which was established in 2008 and has plenty of car parking.

Boasting fish which run from 3lbs to well into double figures, the loch is stocked every week.

The fishery record is held by a rainbow which weighed in at a staggering 26lbs 8oz. Caught in November 2016, a cast of the fish now graces the anglers' lodge... accompanied by other stunningly big fish which have been taken over the years.

Another view of Alderneuk FisheryAlthough the average size of fish is around 4lbs, larger specimens into double figures are regularly taken. However, the fishery requires that fish over 6lbs plus any brown or tiger trout are returned.

Because the banks are cut steeply to a bottom which averages some eight to nine feet deep, anglers don't need to cast far out to catch fish as many are taken by fishing close in to the margins - a feature which is particularly appealing to anglers who are new to fly fishing and haven't yet learned to cast a straight line far out.

As far as tactics are concerned, anglers catch using a variety of techniques from fishing a dry fly or daddy to twitching a single or string of wet flies, suspending a buzzer or two on a slow retrieve to ripping a lure through the water. Whatever technique you fancy, fishery owner Wullie is usually on hand to give advice an assistance where required - and there's even complementary tea and coffee available in the lodge when you want to take a break from fishing plus an assortment of tackle, flies and other accessories at reasonable prices.
